Why EPDM rubber has become a widely used material for Window & Door Gasket?

2025-05-22

EPDM rubber is polymerized from ethylene, propylene and non-conjugated dienes, and its unique molecular structure gives it excellent performance. From the perspective of temperature adaptability, whether it is the extreme cold of winter in the north or the high temperature of summer in the south, window & door gasket made of EPDM rubber can always maintain good elasticity and flexibility. When it is cold, it will not become hard and brittle due to low temperature, resulting in sealing failure; when it is hot, it will not become soft and deformed due to high temperature, affecting normal use. This excellent temperature adaptability ensures that the door and window sealing strips can stably perform the sealing function in different regions and seasons, effectively prevent air convection, reduce the loss or entry of indoor heat, and is of great significance to energy saving and consumption reduction of buildings.
In terms of environmental erosion resistance, EPDM rubber also performs well. Long-term exposure to sunlight, rain and air may quickly cause aging and cracking of ordinary materials, but sealing strips made of EPDM rubber can resist the influence of these natural factors. Ultraviolet rays in the sun and ozone in the air are unlikely to cause substantial damage to it, and rainwater will not reduce its performance. With its outstanding ozone resistance and aging resistance, EPDM door and window seals have a long service life and do not need to be replaced frequently, which reduces maintenance costs and waste of resources.
Chemical corrosion resistance is also a major advantage of EPDM. In daily life and construction environments, doors and windows may be exposed to various chemicals, such as acid and alkali components in detergents, corrosive gases emitted by industries, etc. EPDM has a strong resistance to these acid and alkali chemicals and will not be damaged by chemical corrosion, ensuring the integrity and sealing effect of the seal. This feature makes it particularly suitable for outdoor doors and windows and construction projects with high weather resistance requirements, such as buildings around chemical plants and buildings on the seaside. These environments are often highly corrosive, and ordinary seals are difficult to be competent for a long time, but EPDM seals can handle them with ease.
From the perspective of manufacturing technology, EPDM also has the characteristics of being suitable for the production of door and window seals. In the raw material preparation stage, the EPDM raw rubber is weighed and mixed with carbon black, softener, vulcanizer, etc. in a scientific proportion, and then the various raw materials are fully integrated through high-temperature and strong stirring in the internal mixer to form a rubber compound with good plasticity and uniform performance. Subsequently, in the extrusion molding process, the rubber compound is transported to the extruder, and under the push of the screw and the action of heating and pressure, it passes through a die of a specific shape to form a continuous sealing strip blank. Dies of different shapes can produce sealing strips with various cross-sectional shapes such as D-type, P-type, E-type, O-type, etc., to adapt to different door and window structures and sealing requirements. During the extrusion process, the precise control of temperature, speed and pressure ensures the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the sealing strip.
The sealing strip blank after extrusion molding also needs to be vulcanized. By heating or radiation, the rubber molecular chain undergoes a cross-linking reaction, thereby improving the strength, elasticity, hardness and other properties of the rubber. Different vulcanization methods such as hot air vulcanization, steam vulcanization and microwave vulcanization can be selected according to actual production needs and cost budgets. Hot air vulcanization equipment is simple and low in cost; steam vulcanization can make the sealing strip vulcanize quickly and with uniform quality; microwave vulcanization has the advantages of fast heating speed, short vulcanization time and high product quality. The vulcanized sealing strip undergoes post-processing processes such as cooling, cutting to length, and surface treatment, and finally becomes a door and window sealing strip product with excellent performance and reliable quality.
In actual application scenarios, the advantages of EPDM rubber door and window sealing strips have been fully reflected. In residential buildings, doors and windows equipped with such sealing strips can effectively block external noise and create a quiet and comfortable living environment for residents. Whether it is vehicle noise on the street or the living noise of neighbors, it can be greatly weakened. At the same time, good sealing performance can also prevent rainwater from seeping into the room, protect door and window frames and wall structures, and avoid problems such as mildew and corrosion caused by moisture. In commercial buildings, such as shopping malls and office buildings, EPDM rubber sealing strips can not only save energy and reduce noise, but also prevent dust and mosquitoes from entering the room, keep the indoor environment clean and hygienic, and enhance the experience of customers and employees.
In the field of industrial construction, EPDM rubber door and window sealing strips play an irreplaceable role. For some special places such as chemical plants and food processing plants, the chemical resistance, weather resistance and hygiene of door and window sealing strips are extremely high. With its chemical corrosion resistance, EPDM rubber sealing strips can resist the erosion of various chemical substances in the factory; its aging resistance and weather resistance can adapt to the complex and changeable environment of the factory; at the same time, its odorless and non-toxic characteristics also meet the strict requirements of food processing plants for sanitary conditions.
In the field of automobile manufacturing, EPDM rubber is also widely used in door and window sealing strips. During the driving process, the car will face various complex road conditions and climatic conditions, and the performance requirements of the sealing strips are extremely demanding. EPDM rubber sealing strips can effectively reduce the noise in the car and provide a quiet driving and riding environment for the driver and passengers; prevent rain and dust from entering the car, keep the car clean and dry; and ensure good sealing performance under different temperature environments, which helps to improve the air tightness of the car, reduce air resistance, reduce fuel consumption, and improve the fuel economy of the car.
